16. Modern Dip-Dyed Cotton Rope Basket
Flexible coiled rope baskets offer a warm, tactile storage solution for throw blankets, craft supplies, or potted plants. Using continuous white cotton clothesline rope and a standard sewing machine, you can construct structural, beautifully shaped storage vessels in just an afternoon. Alternatively, this can be done using a hot glue gun for a completely no-sew construction method.
Begin by coiling the end of a 1/4-inch cotton rope into a tight flat disc to form the base of your basket. Using a wide zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine, stitch across the touching edges of the coil to join them securely. Continue coiling and stitching outward to build a flat base to your desired diameter. To transition from the base to the walls of the basket, simply tilt your flat base upward at a 90-degree angle relative to the sewing machine needle while continuing to coil and stitch. Once the basket walls reach your desired height, trim the rope and secure the end. Dip the bottom half of the finished basket into a basin of fabric dye for an ombre, dip-dyed effect, then let it dry thoroughly.
