3. Sculptural Paper Maché Arch Vases

3

Paper maché is no longer just for childhood school projects; modern crafters are utilizing this versatile medium to build striking, organic architectural vases that rival boutique home stores. By building an internal armature out of upcycled cardboard tubes and thick wire, you can create on-trend archways and undulating curved shapes. Join two cardboard mailing tubes at the top with a curved cardboard bridge, securing everything firmly with masking tape.

Prepare a smooth paper maché paste using flour, water, and a splash of PVA glue. Tear strips of non-glossy newspaper or brown kraft paper. Dip the strips into the paste, wiping off excess liquid, and layer them smoothly over your cardboard armature. Apply three to four layers, allowing each layer to dry completely to build structural integrity. Once your arch vase is bone dry and rock hard, apply a generous layer of textured plaster or joint compound across the entire surface. Sand lightly once dry to create a stone-like texture, then paint with neutral terracotta, warm beige, or limewash paint. Insert a slim glass vessel inside the cardboard tubes to hold water for fresh floral arrangements.
