Haunted Mirror with Spooky Apparitions

4

There is nothing quite as unsettling as catching a glimpse of a ghostly figure in a mirror. You can easily recreate this classic horror trope using a cheap dollar store plastic frame mirror. To start, gently remove the mirror from its frame. Print out a vintage, faded black-and-white portrait of a Victorian-era person, or a spooky silhouette of a ghost. Using a piece of fine-grit sandpaper, gently scrape away some of the silver backing on the reverse side of the mirror in the area where you want the apparition to appear. Be careful not to scratch the glass itself.

Once you have created a slightly translucent window in the mirror’s backing, tape your printed image directly behind the scraped area. When you flip the mirror over, the image will subtly peer through the distressed glass, looking like a faint, trapped spirit. To complete the look, spray paint the plastic frame with a textured metallic paint, then dry-brush some black acrylic paint into the crevices to give it an antique, tarnished appearance. Reassemble the mirror and hang it in a dimly lit hallway to give your guests a delightfully eerie surprise when they stop to check their reflection.
