Spooky Specimen Jars

10

Bring the vibe of a mad scientist’s laboratory into your home with these disturbing specimen jars. Look for clear glass jars with lids at the dollar store. Next, browse the toy aisle for plastic creepy-crawlies, such as fake eyeballs, plastic brains, rubber snakes, severed fingers, or plastic mice. To make the specimens look realistic, suspend them inside the jars. You can do this by filling the jars with water mixed with a few drops of yellow, green, or blue food coloring to simulate preservation fluid.

To prevent the plastic toys from floating to the top, hot glue them to the bottom of the jar lid or weigh them down with small glass pebbles before filling the jar. For an extra eerie effect, place a waterproof submersible LED light at the bottom of the jar to illuminate the specimen from below. Label each jar with handwritten tags detailing the “contents” and the “date of harvest.” Display these glowing, murky jars in a dark corner of your kitchen or bathroom for a truly skin-crawling effect.
