5. Haunted Mirror with Translucent Spectral Portrait
Give anyone who looks into your mirror a spine-chilling surprise with a hidden spectral portrait. This DIY project uses a cheap thrift store mirror and a printed translucent image to create a holographic effect. When the light hits the mirror at a certain angle, a ghostly, Victorian figure appears to look back at the viewer from deep within the glass, making it the perfect focal point for a bedroom vanity.
Start by sourcing a mirror with an ornate, vintage-looking frame. Carefully remove the backing of the mirror to expose the rear of the glass. Using a spray bottle filled with a 1:1 mixture of water and bleach, lightly spray the gray backing paint on the reverse side of the mirror, scraping small patches away with steel wool to create a weathered, peeling mercury-glass look. Print a high-contrast vintage portrait in black and white on transparency film. Tape this image securely to the scratched areas on the back of the glass, then replace the backing. The image will peer through the distressed glass, looking incredibly realistic.
