17. Creepy Portrait Frame with Moving Eyes
Add a classic haunted house gag to your bedroom wall with a creepy portrait whose eyes seem to follow you around the room. This classic optical illusion is surprisingly easy to construct using a printed vintage portrait, a shadowbox frame, and a bit of depth manipulation. It is a subtle, spooky addition that will make anyone who enters your room do a double-take.
Print a high-quality, black-and-white vintage portrait of a stern-looking subject. Use a utility knife to carefully cut out the pupils of the eyes. Mount the portrait inside a shadowbox frame, but place the image a few millimeters behind the glass. Behind the cut-out eye holes, mount a second copy of the eyes, curved slightly inward like small bowls. Because of the physical gap between the portrait and the recessed eyes, the gaze of the portrait will appear to follow the viewer as they move across the room.
