12. Victorian Gothic Book Stack

12

Give your bookshelves a literary Halloween makeover with a stack of custom-bound Victorian gothic books. Instead of ruining actual vintage books, this project allows you to transform cheap thrift store novels or paperbacks into ancient, leather-bound spell books, vampire chronicles, or collections of dark poetry that look like they have been sitting in a dusty library for centuries.

Select three or four hardback books of varying sizes. Cover the spines and covers with textured brown paper, faux leather fabric, or even paper towels soaked in black tea and glue to create a wrinkled, leathery texture. Use hot glue to draw raised, ornamental patterns, borders, or spooky titles like “Spells” or “Alchemy” on the spines before painting. Once dry, paint the books with matte black or deep brown acrylic paint. Lightly buff metallic gold wax or acrylic paint over the raised hot-glue details to make them pop, then stack them horizontally and tie them together with jute twine.
