Watercolor and Foil Resist Webs
This project combines science and art in a beautiful, messy exploration of materials. The resist technique is always a crowd-pleaser because it feels like a magic trick unfolding before the children’s eyes. To start, have your kids draw intricate spider webs on thick watercolor paper using a white oil pastel or a piece of white wax candle. Because the wax is clear, the web will be nearly invisible at first. Next, have them brush water over the entire paper and apply vibrant watercolor paints—deep purples, midnight blues, and eerie greens work beautifully for a night-sky effect. The water-based paint will bead up and slide off the waxy lines, revealing the glowing white spider web underneath. To add an extra layer of texture and shine, you can glue small strips of aluminum foil along the borders or press crumpled foil onto the wet paint to create a textured, mottled background. It is a gorgeous, multi-textured masterpiece that kids will want to make over and over again.
