Paper Plate Negative Space Webs
This project is an excellent introduction to the concept of negative space in art and design. Start with a white paper plate and help your child cut out the center circle, leaving only the outer rim. Next, use a hole puncher to create evenly spaced holes all around the inner edge of the rim. Provide your children with a plastic yarn needle threaded with colorful yarn. Have them thread the yarn back and forth through the holes in a random, crisscrossing pattern to fill the empty center of the plate. The contrast between the solid outer rim and the delicate, woven negative space in the center creates a striking, modern look. Kids can paint the paper plate rim beforehand or decorate it with Halloween stickers, markers, and glitter to make their woven creations even more festive and personalized.
