2. Leaf Printing on Canvas
Transforming natural treasures collected during an afternoon walk into lasting art is a wonderful way to connect toddlers with nature. Leaf printing on canvas allows toddlers to explore the unique textures, veins, and shapes of different fallen leaves. It is a process-art activity where the journey of creating is far more important than the final product, yet the result is beautiful enough to hang on the living room wall. This craft helps toddlers understand the concepts of patterns and paint transfer.
Begin by collecting a variety of sturdy, freshly fallen leaves with prominent veins on their undersides. Secure a small artist’s canvas to the table with tape. Let your toddler use a foam brush to paint the bumpy side of a leaf with autumn-colored washable acrylic paints, such as deep red, mustard yellow, and burnt orange. Carefully place the painted side of the leaf onto the canvas, place a piece of scrap paper over it, and have your toddler press down firmly with their flat hands. Peel the leaf away to reveal a gorgeous, detailed print.
