12. Taxidermy Butterfly Shadow Boxes
For a craft that is equal parts beautiful and macabre, try making faux taxidermy butterfly shadow boxes. This project mimics the look of vintage entomology displays but uses entirely animal-friendly materials. By crafting realistic, dark-colored butterflies out of cardstock or transparency sheets and mounting them inside deep shadow boxes, you can create a stunning piece of wall art that looks like it belongs in a Victorian natural history museum.
Start by finding high-resolution images of dark, gothic butterflies, such as the Black Swallowtail or the Death’s-head Hawkmoth. Print these images onto thick cardstock or textured paper, then carefully cut them out with precision scissors. Gently fold the wings upward along the body to give them a lifelike, three-dimensional depth. Cut a piece of black or cream-colored linen fabric to fit the back of your shadow box and glue it down. Use a small piece of foam mounting tape on the underside of each butterfly to elevate it slightly off the backing, then pin a real sewing pin through the center of the body into the foam, mimicking traditional insect pinning. Label each specimen with its scientific name in a cursive font at the bottom of the box.
