Introduction
I’ll be honest: my first skating rink was a disaster. I just flattened some packed ice in a field, called it a rink, and wondered why it looked so sad. Then I spent a weekend building one properly — boards, a warming hut, lanterns strung overhead — and suddenly my whole base felt like a winter festival. A rink is secretly about everything around the ice, not the ice itself. Here’s everything I learned, in twelve builds you’ll actually want to make.
1. The Tiny Backyard Rink

Start small, seriously. My first good rink was barely bigger than my house — a rectangle of packed ice with snow brick edging, a couple of fences, and a lantern on each corner. It took one evening, and it was perfect for just messing around after a day of mining. A bench and a chest of snowballs round it out — somebody always starts a snowball fight.
