12 Minecraft Ice Cave Base Ideas for the New 2026 Winter Drop
I wasn’t planning to move underground this winter. Then Snapshot 3 dropped on October 6, and suddenly there was a whole cave biome under the cold biomes — packed ice, calcite, glowing ice crystals, icicles hanging like teeth — and I was hooked. Mojang hasn’t locked in a release date yet, but December 2026 looks likely. Snow bricks arrived October 27 and packed ice bricks on October 20, so I’ve been living in the ice caves in my test world, freezing, falling through brittle ice, and figuring out what actually makes a good base down there. These are the twelve ideas I’d build again.
1. The Glow-Crystal Entry Tunnel

Don’t just dig a hole and call it a door. I carved a low tunnel in from a snowy hillside, lined it with packed ice, and left the ice crystals where they spawned. They glow on their own, so no torches every three blocks, and the light feels cold and blue instead of warm and yellow. Add snow brick steps at the mouth so it doesn’t look like a mine entrance. It took an evening, and now coming home feels like walking into a different game.
