19. The Industrial Library & Mapmaker’s Loft
Designed for the scholar and explorer, the Industrial Library & Mapmaker’s Loft converts a vast, multi-tier brick warehouse into an atmospheric repository of knowledge. High red brick walls are completely lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelf blocks, accessible via custom iron catwalks, ladders, and scaffolding grids hung from heavy timber ceiling frames. The center of the loft features a massive, illuminated floor-map made of custom maps or colored terracotta, surrounded by lecterns, cartography tables, and globe-like arrangements using sea lanterns and trapdoors. Atmospheric lighting comes from brass-like copper lanterns and reading lamps placed on large spruce study desks. Cozy reading nooks with leather-colored seating and burning fireplaces built into the brick walls make this loft feel like an intellectual’s dream refuge.
